What makes a city uniquely memorable are its landmark architectures, pockets of distinct communities and peculiar shops scattered in small alleys or on certain street corners. Almost all of these structures have their individual characteristics and stories. It is the embodiment of all these that injects vitality into the city keeping it alive, sustainable and forever enhancing its history. Painter Kiyoko Yamaguchi has been devoting herself to a mission painstakingly rendering various cities thus chronicling their narratives.
Trained professionally as an architectural historian, Yamaguchi received her bachelor degree in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley and her doctorate degree from Kyoto University focusing on Southeast Asian architectural history. She taught in the history department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong between 2006 to 2014 and moved back to live in Kyoto, Japan four years ago. Yamaguchi had two previous solo exhibitions in Art Beatus Gallery when she was living here.
In City Narratives, she will exhibit her recent drawings of niche places of the Hong Kong she knows, the unique communities of Kyoto where she lives now as well as some notable Tokyo landmarks. She has taken notes of these locations in face of the inevitable urban changes that are approaching.
City Narratives - Works by Kiyoko Yamaguchi exhibition will open at Art Beatus Gallery on Friday, August 10, 2018 and will continue until September 28, 2018.
