Vancouver, B.C. -- From July 24 to August 31, 1999. Art Beatus will present an exhibition of over 100 works by printmaker/installation artist Wang Gongyi.
Presented will be new a brush & Ink installation "Diary of Conch", this work was an ongoing series of one ink & brush painting of one shell done daily. The works change with the artist's mood, idea and intensity. There are over 100 works which were created to complete this installation. Wang's prints utilizes traditional printmaking techniques, water washes, touche, using booth stone & plates. The works aesthetics are of natural subject matters, abstract lines & textures. Also being exhibited will be early woodcuts, which won Wang an award. Born in 1946 in Tianjin, China. She studied at the China National Academy of Fine Arts in the Faculty of Graphic Reproduction, graduating in 1980. Wang Gongyi is a professor of Printmaking at her alma mater in Hangzhou and has had a very active artistic life. Wang's works have been exhibited in a number of solo & group exhibitions all over the world. Last year she was part of "Die Halfte des Himmels" an important Contemporary Women's exhibition at the Frauen Museum in Bonn, Germany. During 1986 she worked for the Ministry of Culture in France & learned to speak French fluently. Her works are included in many private & public collections.
