Healing

Paintings by Park Soeun

December 18, 2014 - January 28, 2015

Artist will be in attendance at the opening on December 18th (Thursday), 2014, 6 - 8pm

For Korean artist Soeun Park, her paintings are actually chronicles of her memories, emotional healing as well as her solutions to all the sufferings and miseries that she has gone through. Whatever sadness that may be detected from her paintings is well hidden beneath the strong-minded faces of the children whom she has depicted.

“When I paint, my pains, worries and loneliness disappear temporarily,” she said. And as a result, Park has framed and congealed that positive determination in life on the faces of the children to share with the viewers.

“I tell stories about the pains of living and about my personal experiences of life. These stories are related to my repressed desire, anger and self-pity as well as the healing from these repressed emotions,” she stated. “I paint about the repressed and unresolved turmoil because I believe that painting itself can provide healing for myself.”

“I am afraid of life. I want to be happier than anybody else but life is always such a burden for me," Park said in her artist statement. Through this sensitivity to life she brings out positive energy and her best in the paintings.

Park was born in Seoul in 1983 and was educated in the Department of Fine Art at the Sookmyung Women’s University where she also received her master degree. To show her determination in self healing and recovering her past wounds, she has stopped using Park Kyung-sun and changed her name to Park Soeun.

Healing is her second solo exhibition in Art Beatus Gallery. In her previous series of paintings, she tried to deal and heal her “past self” and in this series she wishes to save her  “present self ” from pains and agonies.

The exhibition, Healing, is to open on Thursday December 18th, 2014, at Art Beatus’ Wellington Street space.
