Asura

  Ink Paintings by Wang Xunliang

September  5-25, 2013

Artist will be in attendance at the opening on September 5th (Thursday), 2013, 6 - 8pm

Asuras, in Buddhism, are the names for the lowest ranks of deities.  Though they rank above humans and are regarded as demigods, they are in constant strife with the Devas, the deities who are around to protect the world.  Asuras, addicted to wrath, pride, boasting, bellicosity and greed, are in fact in abundance around us these days according to artist Wang Xun-liang.

The widespread ecological pollution and destruction as well as the worsening of the moral and social corruption around the world and particularly in China have pained Wang.  He is angry because these evil deeds are frequently committed by persons in high places and Wang named these culprits asuras.

Wang has made close to 200 pieces of ink paintings of these characters to vent his anger and in order to draw attention to the hideous deeds that have been committed.  He hopes that his efforts will attract enough positive energy to counteract the evil forces.

Wang Xun-liang is a self-taught artist and excels in ink paintings and seal carving.  This exhibition is his fourth solo show at Art Beatus Gallery.

Asura starts from September 5th until September 25th, 2013.
