Sentimental Journeys

Paintings by Weizhi Zhang

September 6 - 26, 2012

Artist will be present in the Opening Reception: September 6 (Thursday), 2012, 6pm - 8pm

WeiZhi Zhang was engrossed by art since an early age.  After spending more than thirty years in teaching, Weizhi Zhang left the classroom and devoted himself completely into painting.

During his teaching career he also studied in the Fine Art Department of the Beijing Institute of Education and followed by a three year Fine Art Program at the Central Academy of Arts and Design (now became the Academy of Arts and Design of the Tsinghua University).  He significantly improved his painting skills upon learning from the famous artists and art educators at the two institutes.

His watercolour and oil paintings mainly depicted traditional Beijing architectures, which include distinctive domestic dwellings, elegant residences of renowned scholars, gorgeous mansions and magnificent royal palaces.

Zhang dedicated over 10 years depicting many evidences of history that have survived time and some of these treasures may have vanished during the Beijing's urbanization.  Featuring in the Sentimental Journeys exhibition are paintings about Beijing's Imperial Academy's archways, traditional street archways, palaces, hutong courtyard houses, elaborate brick carvings on the gates as well as the house where late Peking Opera maestro, Mei Lanfang, once lived.

Zhang Weizhi has shown his works extensively in Canada, the United States and Asia and many of his paintings are in private collections in both Asia and North America.
