Transfer and Transformation

A Print Exhibition of Works by Shinsuke Minegishi

October 8 - December 10, 2010

Opening Reception: Meet the Artist, Shinsuke Minegishi, October 8 (Fri), 3pm - 6pm

Art Beatus (Vancouver) Consultancy Ltd. is pleased to present, “Transfer and Transformation”, a print exhibition of works by local print and book artist, Shinsuke Minegishi.  On display will be a special selection of works from lithographs to wood cuts and wood engravings all produced in different years.  The title of the exhibition is reflective of printmaking, the process, and of the artist.  Transfer refers to printmaking; a mirror image is transferred from a matrix onto another surface.  Transformation refers to the stages of printmaking but also to the artist who evolves and changes with every new project.  This is as well revealed in the themes and subject matter of his work.

Two recent series, The Nostalgia series and Shadow series show different sides to the artist; one that is thoughtful, quiet and reflective as well as one that is playful, fun, and experimental.  The Nostalgia lithographs emerged as the artist contemplated the number of years spent living in Japan and Canada - almost equal parts of time - and the approach of a milestone in his life, his fortieth birthday.  Drawing upon the influence of both cultures, Minegishi merged the iconic symbol for the Japanese sun with recognizable Canadian landscapes offering a visual discourse bursting with rich contrasting colours and abstraction, while imparting moments of reflection, rumination, feeling, and memories.

Minegishi’s Shadow works, a black and white series of wood engraving prints, provide a different dynamic.  The delicately refined lines, tonal details and shading make these pieces exquisite yet they are also playful and captivating.  Most intriguing is the three-dimensional effect produced by the artist in placing a riser behind a partially unattached layer of the print; when light hits the raised portion of the paper’s surface, a shadow is cast and the result is in turn, a fun and sculptural work.  Three other series of prints – ‘edifice’, ‘trapped Coelacanth’, and ‘cycle of life’ will also be on display.

Shinsuke Minegishi is an award winning print and book media artist, arts educator and studio print technician.  Born in Tokyo in 1970 and educated both in Japan and North America, Shinsuke’s art reflects his life’s combination of these two different cultural contexts and the rich foundation their complementary and contrasting aspects provide.  His prints and books can be found in over 20 public collections throughout the world including the British Library, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Universities of California and the Burnaby Art Gallery.  He currently lives in Vancouver, BC and teaches at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.  “Transfer and Transformation” opens on Friday, October 8 from 3pm to 6pm with a public reception and Shinsuke Minegishi will be in attendance.
