Reception:
Friday, April 30, 3pm to 6pm; Artist in Attendance.
In the city there is constant movement. Passers-by traverse in different directions and moods vary from happy to sad, curious to pensive. Where are people going? What are they thinking? What are they experiencing? Art Beatus (Vancouver) Consultancy Ltd. is pleased to present, “Streetheads” featuring photographic works by Ramón Singley. From behind the lens, New York-based Singley provides viewers with a glimpse into the private moments of everyday people amid city streets, cafes, buses, subways and intersections. The exhibition will open with an afternoon reception on Friday, April 30 from 3pm to 6pm and the public are encouraged to attend to meet the artist who will be present at the opening. Singley does not proclaim the role of the badaud or flaneur, but these words aptly describe his lifestyle; he is drawn to observing people, regardless of caste, in everyday moments on the street and his subjects are usually unaware that their photo is being taken. So candid are the images, one might feel as though they are sneaking a peek into the subject’s most personal moment, however the intimacy and mood of each image also provide the viewer with the opportunity to relate to the subject’s state of existence, perhaps sharing similar feelings experienced in one’s own life. “The temptation of capturing these fleeting moments, without being detected by the subject matter is my way of seeing people”. “…This work is a sincere reflection of today’s people and aesthetic as part of a literal reality - the actual face of the glass mirror’s intention … Sometimes there’s information, oft times it’s vague. While there’s obvious information in the image, I, too, am captivated by the second read within the not so obvious shadows leaving ample room for interpretation within these shadows and less obvious details one can find in the photograph later …. It is my opinion these details live a conscious, yet hidden existence with a voice for those willing to discover. This is the beauty of a photograph for me”. The 1867 Larousse encyclopedia entry describes the badaud at work, “One is constantly jostled by a crowd of individuals who leave their houses each morning to kill time in city squares, intersections and on the boulevards; they have ten hours to dispose of, and when they return home in the evening, they want to have something to recount: an accident, a poor devil who falls from a bus into the street or faints from hunger, an old dog drowned in the Seine, etc., etc.; and when one of these Tituses of the pavement has seen nothing, observed nothing, he cries: I have lost my day!”. Born in Los Angeles in 1971, Singley primarily works as a photographer. Additionally, he's an art director, and in the past, was an editor and a writer which eventually piqued his interests in photography. In 2009, he participated in a group exhibition at Gallery Nine 5 in New York. This year he has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Christopher Henry Gallery, also in New York City. Singley has a BFA in Photography & Imaging and a BA in Broadcast Journalism. The “Streetheads”’ exhibition at Art Beatus (Vancouver) runs from Friday, April 30 to Friday, July 2, 2010.
