Opening Ceremony - December 2,
2005 ,
6pm - 8pm:
Artist will attend the opening ceremony For years Sara Tse has been investigating how to turn an object into a tool for memory. She probably has accepted ceramic as the medium for her artistic creations and started transforming her memories of numerous garments and fabrics into ceramic sculptures. This Hong Kong born artist said," Memory is not just about remembering, it is also about forgetting (loss)." In creating her ceramic works, the original objects to be"remembered" are burnt away in the kiln during the firing process leaving behind only thin ceramic shells of the originals. The process thus simultaneously registers remembering and forgetting at the same time. Tse is now a doctorate degree candidate of the Fine Art Department of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia. In 1997, she graduated from the Fine Art Department of the Hong Kong Chinese University and has held numerous solo and exhibitions since 1995. Her works are in the collections of the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Queensland Art Gallery, Australia and the Annie Wong Art Foundation. In the "Conserve Memory" exhibition, Tse will conceptually explore the conservation of memory. She takes motifs from a lace fabric and transforms them into ceramic pieces. These finished ceramic pieces are then sewn back onto the fabric to highlight the contract happened during the transformation step. On the fabric, these motifs, which are created by machine, are exactly the same. But after the firing, these ceramic pieces have shrunk and become all different bearing an more organic outlook. Art Beatus Gallery is located at Shop 301-302, Exchange Square One podium level.
