Highly Acclaimed Paintings by Jean-Michel Basquiat Featured at Art Beatus GalleryVancouver, B.C. -- "Jean-Michel lived like a flame. He burned really bright. Then the fire went out. But the embers are still hot." That is how a friend of Jean-Michel Basquiat described the controversial graffiti artist at his memorial service in New York in 1988. Art Beatus Gallery in Vancouver is hosting an exhibition of a collection of work by Jean-Michel Basquiat September 12 to October 18. Basquiat died at the age of 27. His shocking paintings are engaging reflections on issues such as racism, poverty, urban culture and death. Initially considered by the art world as an outsider, Basquiat's seemingly child-like works are in fact desperate outcries which challenge our definitions of art and culture. The Directors of Art Beatus are pleased to have the opportunity to present the work of this first class contemporary artist. The mission of the gallery is to promote modern Chinese art and at the same time to encourage dialogue between contemporary art of the east and the west. "The circumstances surrounding Basquiat's work are similar to those of many contemporary Chinese artists," says gallery director Sheng Tian Zheng. "His work was initially considered outside the mainstream as it actively challenged an established art world to seek acceptance from the general public. "We feel this exhibition of Basquiat's work is a significant artistic event for Vancouver. We hope it will reaffirm the city as an emerging international centre for the visual arts." For further
