During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), people covered the brick carvings
with plaster in order to protect them.  Not until 2005 was the ornate carvings
revealed again.  This gate reflects the harmony co-existence of both
eastern and western styles.  It was said that this house belonged to the
late scholar and politician Xu Shi Chang.
