Artist Statement
Luxuriant
Materialism
Major cities around the world, including Hong Kong, are
indulged in rampant materialistic consumerism with some
consumers in hot pursuit of local or international
brands trying to meet their unstoppable desires.
Shops of these luxurious brands repeatedly flourish in
various districts and shopping malls in Hong Kong
reaching out to the general public like the branches of
trees.
In my works, I attempt to use the shadows of pedestrians
to project the inner desires in a consumer city.
Quite a number of consumers have taken up the use of
luxuriant brands as their own symbols of status. They
have lost their own identities and submitted themselves
following the waggling tails of the brands.
The Buddhist teachings say human sufferings are from
their greed, anger and craze. Part of the craze is from
people’s pursuit of luxury and neglect of basic needs.
My somewhat humorous photographs also show an
alternative urban landscape of Hong Kong.
